George Washington Shaiffer poetry book, 1844-1857 (bulk 1845-1847)

The book contains printed obituaries for four of George Washington Shaiffer's siblings, R. Douglass, Jane, Mary, and James; his sister-in-law, Eliza Gemmill Stewart Thompson, and her daughter Mrs. Anna Thompson Gemmill. The book apparently was Jane's property in 1843 and passed to her brother upon her death in 1845. George wrote thirty-five unpublished poems in this volume, many of which dwell on funerals, lost siblings, time, seasons passing, lost friends, distant memory, sad days, loneliness, and also friendship and religion. There are several brooding, romantic poems to women friends, four acrostic poems, and four previously published poems by other authors that Jane Shaiffer copied into the book. Also includes two steel engravings tipped in (View of Northumberland (on the Susquehanna) by H. Bartlett, and The Indian fruit-seller, drawn by W. Daniell and engraved by R. Woodman, and a dried pressed rose.

1 volume (68 pages) : half morocco, marbled boards ; 20 cm.
